When does aVNS treatment make sense?

aVNS treatment can help with the following pain indications:

  • Chronic back pain
  • Chronic cervical syndrome
  • Migraines
  • Acute post-operative pain.
How does aVNS treatment work?

Your doctor will attach three small needle electrodes in the pinna of your ear. A small battery-powered stimulator is then attached to your neck behind the ear, which uses the electrodes to stimulate the vagus nerve in a special rhythm.

Will I feel the stimulation/will the stimulation hurt?

The perception of the stimulation can vary, but you should feel a clear but comfortable sensation. You will feel a light throbbing or pulling sensation, though the intensity can vary heavily for different people.

How long will the device stay on my ear?

The device usually stays on your ear for 7 days. However, it does not interfere with everyday activities. The treatment can be repeated over several weeks (e.g. 6–8 weeks) on the advice of your doctor, in which case it will be alternated between your left and right ear.

What side effects can occur?

The most common side effects include:

  • Skin irritation on the ear/neck
  • Pain at the puncture site
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headache

You can also ask your doctor about potential side effects.

When should I not do aVNS Treatment?
  • Pregnancy
  • Haemophilia
  • Infection, eczema or psoriasis in the application region
  • Malignant diseases in an active stage
  • Mental and/or physical impairments that prevent the application of the treatment
  • Active implanted devices, e.g. a pacemaker
  • Over-sensitivity of the vagus nerve

Ask your doctor if aVNS treatment is right for you.

How can I receive aVNS treatment?

Your doctor will inform you about the possibility of aVNS treatment.
